“Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. The friends who listen to us are the ones we move toward. When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand.” – Karl A. Menniger
2019 is here! A time of reflection and hope.
My 2018 #oneword was Cultivate. I explored inquiry-based instruction, discovered the power (and gift) of being a connected educator through #4OCFPLN and in the process grew in my awareness and ability to support student’s social-emotional learning and create a learning environment that encourages and nurtures wonder and creativity.
Looking toward #2019, my hope, and goal will be to build a practice where students know their voice, their dreams, aspirations, feelings, and fears are valued and respected.
My action plan will be to work on listening to understand vs. listening to reply. This will take an immense amount of discipline as it goes against my nature, but deep inside I sense listening to others is one of the most powerful forms of respect and a pathway to building trusting and authentic relationships.
It will take time and patience (and a lot of practice and a strong growth mindset) but I am ready for this new way of thinking and acting. I am hopeful that as I listen and learn more about each student they will, in turn, feel safe and accepted to lean into their creative force and that their understanding and learning will unfold and expand.
